So glad to see the amount of winery tasting rooms popping up in Woodinville, Washington-home of Chateau Ste. Michelle. With 36,000 acres of vines planted now in Washington with 52% being white varietals and 48% being red varietals, the state is certainly stating its claim to fame in the winery business. The top wine publications are touting about the caliber of the states wines and the ratings are to be commended upon.
With that being said, it is interesting to find that wineries are being insured most of the time as a business and not a winery. I am an insurance broker representing at least 50 underwriters and when discussing wineries with the agribusiness departments within the carriers they express to me that most claims arise on cargo. With so many wineries having trucks bringing grapes to their facilities for crush, it is astonishing how many forget that cargo insurance.
